Hey all, I just thought I’d share a bit of news with you before I run out of the house!! the following is an article printed in Grenada’s Spice Isle Review Newspaper. It speaks of Barbados being the first island in the Caribbean Region to open a Food Bank and Development Centre for persons affected by the HIV/AIDS Virus. I must say this is a great initiative on the part of the Barbadian Government, I applaud them for doing something like this and I hope other islands can take a page out of their book with regard to helping persons living with the virus and educating those who are and are not infected, or directly affected.
Barbados Opens Region’s First HIV/AIDS Food Bank
“Barbados has become the first country in the region to have a dedicated HIV/AIDS Food Bank and Personal Development Centre.
Health Minister Donville Inniss, in officially opening the Vashti Inniss Empowerment Centre last week, said the new facility signaled government’s commitment to meet the 2006 United Nations’ General Assembly goal of Universal Access to comprehensive HIV prevention, programmes, treatment, care and support by 2010.
Inniss said the facility will improve accessibility to essential prevention and care services, and that government recognised that cost should not be a barrier to accessing essentials such as medicines, diagnostics and services and meaningful information.
The facility houses the food bank and a personal development centre – named after an early pioneer in empowering person infected and living with HIV, retired health educator Vashti Inniss – that provides comprehensive HIV prevention and psychosocial support and care services to all those in need.
Minister Inniss said the combined facility would ensure that prevention, treatment, care and impact mitigation services are delivered with the full inclusion of people living with HIV, civil society, faith-based organisations, private sector, international partners and government.
The HIV/AIDS Food Bank is managed by a Community Nutrition Officer, with specialist training in HIV nutrition, assisted by a cadre of dedicated volunteers.
Psychology services will be provided by a clinical psychologist; while HIV testing and counseling, and community health education will be the responsibility of the Ministry of Health.
The unit also houses the Sex Worker’s Project and three non-governmental organisations (NGOs) that cater to the needs of persons living with HIV (PLHIV).”
Hey guys, YES, YOU READ RIGHT… LOL
so for months I’ve been saying that I need to lose some weight.. because I’ve allowed myself to gain so much… and I’d start doing something about it but then a few weeks (if so much in some cases) would go by and then I’d stop. That’s the way the cycle has been going for the past couple months well… However, I’ve am at the point where I am ready and so committed to doing this. I have been trying to eat healthy for a few weeks now, so I’m going to step up my game with that.. and as of Monday my workouts begin…
Mind you, I don’t want to become skinny, by no means is that the goal here… I love my hips and thighs and my derriere. I’d just like to drop a couple pounds and do some serious toning, main goal of course being my tummy!! I will be keeping y’all posted on my activities with regards to this personal project.

“Be The Change You Want To See In The World” – Mahatma Gandhi
Too often, I hear people, especially young people crying down the Government, or as my Grandmother would say “crying trouble”…. I’m riding the bus, there’s someone complaining, walking through town, someone complaining, out somewhere… someone complaining… what I cannot fathom is why we think that it is the sole responsibility of the Government to improve on our situation or circumstances.
I have always been firm in the belief that if we want to see change, it must begin with us… and we must keep in mind that it cannot be done by one person alone.. yes if I have a problem and I speak up about it I might be heard.. heck someone may even listen to me.. but if we unite and speak out together about the issues that concern us I’m confident it will have a more significant impact and will in turn produce better and more speedy results.
Instead of all individually sitting, moaning and whining about what’s not being done.. what should be done, what we would do if we were in that situation why, why can’t we come together as a united front and speak out?? act out and be the change… I mean what exactly is it that we’re waiting for? Those before us did the same thing, and those before them.. and so on and so forth… We continue their trend of using our complaints for small talk/chit chat, we continue to procrastinate… The time is now, not later, not tomorrow, not next month.. not when you have your degree.. but NOW
Now I’m not saying grab arms and revolt, by no means is that my advice or message but there are so many avenues and means of speaking and acting out, letting our views, ideas and concerns be heard… and trust me, if we’re waiting for things to happen on their own, or for the Government to do everything we have one lonnnnngggg, drawn out wait ahead of us. Is it that we are afraid of change, so that even though we constantly condemn the lack thereof, we still refrain from doing anything to aid in acquiring it? Or is it that we hear someone talk about something so when we are in the midst of others we bring it up so as to make ourselves sound like intelligent and concerned citizens?? I think it’s that we are LAZY, too laid back to get off our butts and do something on our own!! Moreover, I think we are, without a question afraid of change.
I know some of you will argue “well we voted for a change in Government so how can we be afraid of change?” Well voting them there is one thing.. but what about pulling up on their socks when needed? What about reminding them of the goals and projects in their manifesto? What…. about speaking and acting out?? Sharing our thoughts, our problems, our concerns, coming together and maybe even finding solutions amongst each other instead of behaving like helpless cripples that are solely dependent on the Government to provide, to solve every one of our problems and miraculously make everything okay, every single day for every single person.
Change begins with us! We are the change we want to see in our Country and the world at large.. it is up to us to find the will and drive and courage to unite and speak out, act out and make a difference!! Let’s not allow ourselves to sit idly by, whispering about what we think should be done.. or what the problems are yet doing nothing about it. We possess the ability to change our circumstances, the power is in our hands… and if we could just realise that and capitalise on it.. change would come… not swiftly in all cases… and not all at once.. but change will de finitely come.
SO GET UP… STOP WHINING TO YOURSELF AND FRIENDS, UNITE AS OUR NATION’S PRESENT.. AND FUTURE AND SPEAK UP…. ACT OUT FOR CHANGE!!
